Hey Dan,
It was great hearing your voice! I can't wait to see you and your newly acquired muscles!
I just spent about 30 mins. searching for summer research opportunities. It's amazing how many there are, but there aren't many with a later deadline for application. Yale has an awesome site with links to other summer programs. Here it is:

Check out the UCLA, USC, etc. research projects sites too.
You should talk to the bio/physics/mechanical engineering research program at Yale and ask them if they could recommend, refer, or connect you to similar programs in CA. Most application deadlines have passed. For next year you need to start the process as early as Dec. Caltech has a really cool program called SURF, but they take applications in Dec. or earlier. Here is one I found: Southern Ca earthquake research with a "second/late deadline" -

Don't give up yet. Many of these summer research or internship programs have a high stipend; I was surprised. Keep looking and networking. People connections are often the most important ingredient in landing in a good job.
Take the time to do this now before you get busy with school again. Good luck!
Love ya,
Mom
